As to the Woman Question: The Admission of Women to the University of Michigan
Both a physical and digital exhibit, this website explores the history of the debate over women’s education at the university.
Focused on the 1850s to 1880s, it describes the first women who tried to be admitted to the university, the debates among administrators and regents about whether to admit women, various perspectives on women’s education, and the first women to enroll at the university. The exhibit draws on alumni records and private papers held at the Bentley Historical Library as well as additional articles and resources about women’s history in Michigan.
